Chicken & Sardine Dinner
This nutritious protein combo came to our resident dog nutritionist one day when he was thinking about ways of adding more oily fish to his own diet. It worked so well for him, we decided to add the recipe to our own menu of easy homemade dog food.
- 2.5kg (5lb 8oz) Chicken Breast
- 425g (15oz) Sweet Potatoes
- 332g (11 3/4oz) Swede (unpeeled, finely chopped)
- 195g (7oz) Carrots (unpeeled, diced)
- 191g (6 3/4oz) Spinach (finely chopped)
- 84g (3oz) Red Pepper (seeds removed, finely chopped)
- 4 tins Sardines in Olive Oil
- 1 Egg (hard boiled)
- 50g (1 3/4oz) Sunflower Seeds
- 2g (large pinch) Salt
- 12g (3 heaped tablespoon) Dog Food Seasoning
- 15g (6 level teaspoons) Essential Calcium for Dogs
Add the chicken, sweet potatoes, carrots and swede to a slow cooker. Add 284ml (1/2 pint) of water, the salt and the Dog Food Seasoning.
Cover and cook on a low heat for 5-6 hours or on a high heat for 2-3 hours. Add the red peper and spinach about halfway through the cook. Stir occasionally.
Once cooled, stir in the sardines and the sunflower seeds before apportioning and/or serving.
Either freeze what you don’t immediately need or keep in the fridge for up to 4 days.
About this Recipe
As we all know, oily fish has been linked to numerous health benefits. As humans beings, the NHS recommmends we should be eating at least 1 portion of oily fish a week as part of a well-balanced diet. Particularly rich in long-chain omega-3 fatty acids, oily fish is great for maintaining a healthy heart.
Oily fish is also the perfect choice for maintaining good heart health in dogs. An excellent source of novel protein, few things are better for helping maintain a dog’s skin and coat in tip top condition.
