Go On, Grasp the Nettle

As a keen gardener, I’m not overly fond of stinging nettles. The vicious blighters are for ever catching me unawares. And yet I’ve been giving my dogs Nettle Leaf for years. How does that work?

I think perhaps it’s time we all gave Urtica dioica it little more love!

I’ve been big on Nettle Leaf for dogs for as long as I can remember. Nettle Leaf forms part of my Dog Chef Daily, something my in-house dog nutritionist devised some years ago as a way of future-proofing the health of dogs. And yet I don’t think nearly as kind of the plant when it spitefully stings me multiple times a year. This year though, I’ve promised myself I’m going to be more respectful of the humble stinging nettle. It has a lot to offer in so many ways.

Nettles are rich in vitamins. Particularly vitamins A, C, D and K. They’re rich in minerals too, primarily iron, calcium, phosphorus, magnesium and potassium along with fibre.

As fas your dog is concerned, nettles are a good source of energy, they can help improve your dog’s skin and coat condition, and their antibacterial, astringent and antihistamine properties make them a friend to any dog who suffers with seasonal allergies.

And I haven’t finished yet. Nettles are also great for the digestive system and of definite benefit if your dog suffers from arthritis.

It’s for all these reasons and more that my canine nutritionist rates them so highly, and why I’m going to give Nettle Leaf for dogs a great deal more respect in the future. I hope you will too!

If you make homemade food for your dog, you'll need to supplement to make that food complete. My natural supplements are made in-house with canine nutritionist approved 100% natural ingredients with no additives or preservatives of any kind.
