Dogs and Coconut Flour

Coconut flour is a soft aromatic flour made from dried coconut meat. It’s gluten-free, high in fibre, 100% natural and an excellent source of plant-based protein.
From the perspective of the home baker, coconut flour’s high fibre content makes it more absorbent. That means you need less of it than normal wheat flour.
So if you or your dog are at war with wheat or have a grudge with gluten, coconut flour could be the flour for you!

I’m a huge fan of coconut. I use coconut oil along with turmeric and black pepper in my Daily Hip & Joint supplement.
I also use coconut flour in my dogs’ treats and in some of my mixes such as my Liver Cake Training Treat Baking Mix.
So what is it about dogs and coconut flour?
Coconut flour is a soft, aromatic flour made from dried and ground coconut meat. That’s the white fleshy part of the coconut to you and me.
It’s high in protein, rich in healthy fats, iron, fibre and various vitamins. Importantly, it’s also completely gluten-free, which makes it of huge benefit to any dog unfortunate enough to suffer from wheat or gluten allergies. Wheat allergies are rarer in dogs than most people think, but they still occur so I err on the side of caution and don’t use wheat at all.
While coconut flour is much more expensive than wheat flour, it’s considerably healthier. Being low on the glycemic index, it’s also ideal for any canine sufferer of digestive problems, diabetes or coeliac disease.
So if you know your dog has a wheat allergy or you just want to be on the safe side, give coconut flour a go.
