Fonio and Veggie Water Iced Treats

by | Last updated Sep 17, 2026 | Iced Treats, Treat Recipes

These Fonio and Veggie Water Iced Treats cost pennies, made use of the veggie water from last night’s dinner and took just minutes to make.

Sometimes I think being The Dog Chef is just about the best job in the world!

Recipe at a glance

  • Ease: beginner friendly.

  • Cook time: 10 minutes.
  • Total time: 15 minutes.
  • Servings: makes 12 condiment pots.
  • Suitability: all dogs.
  • Dietary: puppy friendly, plant-based, dairy-free, gluten-free.
  • Serving suggestion: perfect summer’s day treat.
  • Storage: fridge 3-4 days, freezer 3 months.

Ingredients

Method

1. In a lidded saucepan, bring to a boil 2 cups of vegetable water. You could simply use plain water but I was trying to make use of our own vegetable water from the previous evening. (No onion water — onions are highly toxic to dogs)!

2. Remove liquid from the heat, add the fonio, replace the lid on the saucepan and allow the fonio to absorb all the liquid.

3. Decant the mixture into pots or ice cube trays. I added blueberries to some, chard stems and chard leaves to others just because I had them spare.

4. Freeze for 2 to 3 hours and they are ready for your dog to try.

Nutritional enrichment

To enable your dog to get the best out of fonio, use bone broth instead of water, or drizzle the finished treat with a little olive oil at the point of serving. This will not only maximise nutrient absorption, it will make these iced treats even tastier for your dog as well.

Recipe notes

This recipe goes to show that making treats for your dog does not have to be time-consuming or expensive. It came about purely because I was looking for a way to make use of the previous evening’s vegetable water from our own meal on a day when I hadn’t planned to cook for my dogs so had no other use for it.

The fact that you’ve used only human-grade ingredients means you’re welcome to try these iced treats yourself, so what’s not to like if you love your dog, enjoy cooking and hate to see good food go to waste!

The Dog Chef Guide to Homemade Dog Food

Looking to supercharge your dog's diet with fresh food?

Our Canine Nutritionist says…

Fonio is Africa’s oldest cultivated cereal grain, having been grown in West Africa for over 5,000 years. In the mythology of Mali’s Dogon people it is known as the “Seed of the Universe”. Despite its tiny, sand-like size, it holds unique agricultural, cultural and nutritional properties that make it stand out from any other grain on earth

It is exceptionally nutritious and stands head and shoulders above other major cereal grains because it is rich in the sulphur-containing amino acids methionine and cystine, amino acids that are largely missing in wheat, rice and corn. It’s also naturally gluten-free and packed with essential minerals.
