Game on Sunday
While every man and his dog was preparing for last Sunday’s football in Mexico City, I was in my kitchen making a batch of food for my dogs. I may not be the typical working mum, but I am the typical dog-mum: too little time, too hot and bothered, two big dogs to feed!

Method
1. Rinse the quinoa under cold running water to remove the bitter-tasting saponins. Add to a saucepan with 2 cups of water. Bring to a boil then simmer until all water absorbed. Set aside.
2. Chop all fruits and vegetables.
3. Add chopped butternut squash together with a sprinkle of salt to a saucepan with sufficient water to cover. Cook for ten minutes before adding celery, mushrooms, bell peppers, apple and courgettes. Once cooked, leave on heat and mix in diced chard. Leave to cool before apportioning and/or serving.

Recipe notes
1. As many will already be aware, I believe in feeding dogs in much the same way we feed ourselves. After all, it’s what we’ve done for thousands of years. Ancient peoples didn’t risk life and limb sourcing one set of ingredients for themselves and then do the same thing over again for their family dog. Their dogs ate what they were eating or what they had available at the time.
2. There are no precise weights for many of the ingredients, the one exception being quinoa because I find it easier to cook using a measuring cup. The only important proportion is the protein which is 70% of the overall cook. Simply make up the other 30% of the batch with whatever of the other ingredients you have to hand. Think about how you put together many of your own meals!
