The Dog Chef Guide to Homemade Dog Food

Looking to supercharge your dog's diet with fresh food?

Method

1. Cut chicken breasts into equal, bite-sized pieces. Equal sizing ensures even cooking.
2. Place the chicken pieces in a single layer at the bottom of a wide saucepan or frying pan. Do not overcrowd or stack the pieces.
3. Pour cold water over the chicken until it is submerged by about 2.5 centimetres (1 inch). For extra flavour, you can use a 100% pet-safe, sodium-free bone broth instead of water.
4. Place the pan over medium-high heat just until tiny bubbles begin to break the surface. Do not let it boil. Boiling toughens the protein fibres.
5. Immediately turn the heat down to low. Cover the pan with a tight-fitting lid.
6. Simmer gently for 12 to 15 minutes. The meat should be completely opaque white throughout.
7. Remove the chicken with a slotted spoon. Let it cool completely to room temperature before serving together with a blend of lightly cooked veggies or a helping of quinoa.

Recipe notes

1. This is not GBBO. Your dog won’t mind if its venison balls are not completely round.
2. You can use any cheese and you can change the flour to any flour you have in the cupboard.
3. This is not a complete meal. It is designed to be a complementary meal — a treat or a snack.
4. Do give these a try yourself. You made them, you know what’s in them, so why not?

Our Dog Nutritionist says…

Chicken breast may not be as nutritious as chicken thigh, but it’s still a highly digestible source of lean protein which is low in fat and calories. This makes it an ideal choice for dogs with digestive issues and for any dog needing to lose a little weight.
