Turkey for Dogs: A Complete Guide

by | Last updated Sep 28, 2026 | Protein

The earliest archaeological evidence of dogs eating turkey traces back to Mesoamerica, specifically around 400 BCE in ancient Maya cities like Ceibal in modern-day Guatemala. There, zooarchaeologists have discovered that the Maya explicitly fed their dogs a specialised diet heavy in corn and meat.

Interestingly, the Maya kept very few domesticated animals — primarily dogs and turkeys, both of which often ate the same corn-rich food scraps as the human members of their family. Because dogs and turkeys were raised together in these communities — often for meat or ritual purposes — dogs routinely consumed turkey scraps or shared the same maize-based feed.

Health benefits of turkey for dogs

Turkey is a highly nutritious, lean protein source that offers significant health benefits for dogs. It serves as an excellent foundation for muscle health, weight management and immune support.

Key health benefits of turkey for dogs include:

  • High-quality lean protein: turkey is an exceptional source of digestible protein which serves as the building block for healthy muscles, tissues and cellular repair.
  • Low in fat: turkey breast is naturally lower in fat compared to beef or pork. This makes it an ideal option for dogs on a weight management plan or those prone to pancreatitis.
  • Gentle on the digestive system: turkey is highly digestible and frequently used as an alternative protein source for dogs with food allergies or sensitive stomachs.
  • Immune & metabolic support: turkey is packed with essential B vitamins (B3, B6, and B12) that boost metabolism and energy production. It also contains zinc and selenium which function as powerful antioxidants to support a robust immune system.
  • Bone & heart health: the phosphorus and calcium in turkey support strong teeth and bones, while minerals like potassium and iron promote healthy cardiovascular function and oxygen transport.
  • Calming properties: turkey contains tryptophan, an amino acid that converts into serotonin and can help reduce anxiety and stress in your dog.

How much turkey can dogs eat?

Animal proteins such as turkey should make up between 50% and 70% of your dog’s overall, homemade diet.

Importantly, bear in mind that turkey cannot be your dog’s only source of protein. Ideally, any dog should have between 3 and 4 different proteins on a regular basis.

How to feed a dog turkey

To feed your dog turkey:

  • First remove all skin and fat. Turkey skin is high in fat. It can easily trigger acute pancreatitis (a painful and dangerous inflammation of the pancreas) or severe digestive upset.
  • Never give a dog cooked turkey bones. Cooked bones are brittle, meaning they splinter easily and can puncture your dog’s stomach or intestines potentially causing life-threatening internal bleeding or blockages.

Best parts to feed your dog

  • White breast meat: skinless breast meat is the leanest option.
  • Dark turkey meat: highly nutritious and offers several distinct health benefits making it an excellent alternative to white meat. Found in the active muscles of the bird such as the legs and thighs, its darker hue is caused by myoglobin, a protein that delivers essential oxygen to the muscles.
  • Turkey mince: turkey mince makes an excellent, lean protein source that is perfect for a dog on an exclusion diet or one needing to lose weight.

Your dog can safely eat turkey cooked or raw.
