Pork for Dogs: A Complete Guide
When humans began domesticating wild boars approximately 9,000 to 10,000 years ago in the Near East and China, dogs were already living alongside human settlements. Early dogs survived primarily on human refuse. In settlements where pigs were slaughtered for food, dogs naturally consumed the leftover scraps, bones and discarded offal.
By the 1700s and 1800s, farmers explicitly utilised pig byproducts to keep working animals healthy. Farm and hunting dogs were regularly fed mixed grains combined with rendered pig fat to provide them with the high-calorie energy needed for gruelling daily work.
Today, pork is widely recognised as a highly digestible, protein-rich option for dogs, often used as an alternative for dogs with allergies to chicken or beef.

Health benefits of pork for dogs
Pork is an excellent and highly nutritious protein source for dogs. It provides a wide range of essential nutrients that support a dog’s muscles, energy levels and immune system.
Key health benefits of pork for dogs include:
- High-quality complete protein: pork is a complete protein source containing all essential amino acids needed for lean muscle mass maintenance, tissue growth and cell repair in dogs.
- Rich in B vitamins: pork is packed with crucial B vitamins — particularly thiamine (B1), B6, B12 and niacin. These vitamins play a massive role in regulating cellular energy metabolism, protecting the nervous system, and producing healthy red blood cells.
- Essential minerals: pork provides bioavailable zinc, iron, selenium and phosphorus. These minerals support immune health, quicken wound healing, prevent anaemia and keep bones and teeth strong.
- Highly digestible: pork is incredibly gentle on the digestive tract. Because it is easily absorbed, your dog can utilise more of the meat’s nutrients which can lead to better stool quality and sustained energy.
- Non-standard protein alternative: because pork is not as traditionally common in commercial dog kibble as chicken or beef, it serves as a novel or uncommon protein. If your dog suffers from food intolerances, itchy skin or chronic ear infections caused by common poultry allergies, switching to pork can drastically reduce triggers.
- Healthy fats for coat health: pork has a well-balanced profile of saturated and monounsaturated fats and it is a natural source of linoleic acid (an omega-6 fatty acid). This helps hydrate the skin, reduce inflammation and give your dog a shinier coat.
- Highly palatable: pork has a naturally rich, savoury flavour and aroma that particularly appeals to fussy eaters or senior dogs with declining appetites.

Importantly, bear in mind that pork cannot be your dog’s only source of protein. Ideally, any dog should have between 3 and 4 different proteins on a regular basis.

How to feed a dog pork
- Choose lean cuts: pick meats with less fat such as pork loin, tenderloin or pork mince with a maximum 5% fat.
- Trim the fat: cut away all visible fat before cooking to help prevent digestive distress or pancreatitis.
- Feed lightly cooked or raw: a dog’s digestive system is perfectly capable of handling raw pork. After all, dogs have been eating raw meat for tens of thousands of years!
- Remove bones: never feed your dog cooked pork bones (or any other type of cooked bones) because they splinter easily and can cause severe internal injuries or choking.
- Avoid processed pork products: never feed your dog any kind of processed pork meats such as bacon, ham, sausages or seasoned pork chops.
