Chia Seeds for Dogs: A Complete Guide

by | Last updated Sep 14, 2026 | Nuts & Seeds

Chia seeds were first domesticated around 2600 BC and served as a staple crop for the Mayan and Aztec civilisations. Indigenous Mesoamerican dogs lived in close proximity to human agricultural settlements so chia seeds would have been a staple of their diet too.

Following the arrival of the Spanish in the 1500s, the cultivation of chia was banned due to its religious and ceremonial significance to the Aztecs. Its commercial rebirth only began again in the 1990s but it was early in the 21st century before nutritional researchers rediscovered chia as a powerhouse of omega-3 fatty acids, plant protein and soluble fibre.

Can dogs eat chia seeds?

Yes, dogs can eat chia seeds, says our in-house dog nutritionist. They are considered an excellent functional superfood for dogs, highly nutritious and packed with fibre, omega-3 fatty acids and essential minerals.

Health benefits of chia seeds for dogs

Feeding dogs chia seeds provides a serious boost of omega-3 fatty acids, dietary fibre, plant-based protein and essential minerals that support their skin, joints and digestive health.

Key health benefits include:

  • Promote skin and coat health: chia seeds are rich in alpha-linolenic acid (ALA) omega-3 fatty acids which moisturise dry skin, reduce inflammation, and give your dog a shiny coat.
  • Improve digestive health: packed with soluble fibre, chia seeds absorb water to form a gel that regulates bowel movements, relieves constipation and supports overall gut health.
  • Aid weight management: because they expand in the stomach, chia seeds help your dog feel full for longer, making them an excellent natural tool to prevent overeating and obesity.
  • Support joint and bone health: chia seeds contain essential minerals like calcium, phosphorus and manganese which are vital for maintaining strong bone structures and smooth joint mobility.
  • Regulate blood sugar: the high fibre content of chia seeds slows down the conversion of carbohydrates into simple sugars, helping to stabilise blood glucose and support dogs with diabetes.

How much chia seed can dogs eat?

While there are no strict upper or lower limits to the amount of chia seeds to feed a dog a day, the following represent widely acknowledged safe amounts:

  • Toy dogs (under 4.5kg): 1/4 teaspoon.
  • Small dogs (under 10kg): 1/2 teaspoon.
  • Medium dogs (10–25kg): 3/4 teaspoon.
  • Large dogs (over 25kg): 1-2 teaspoons.

How to feed a dog chia seeds

Chia seeds (Salvia hispanica) are an outstanding nutritional powerhouse. They contain three times more omega-3 fatty acids than salmon by weight, which helps reduce inflammation, soothe stiff joints and promote a glossy coat. They are also packed with calcium, manganese, antioxidants and a massive amount of soluble fibre which supports healthy digestion and regulates blood sugar levels.

Unlike flaxseeds, chia seeds do not need to be ground up for your dog to absorb their nutrients. However, you should always soak chia seeds in water before feeding them to your dog.

Chia seeds can absorb up to 10 to 12 times their weight in liquid. If fed completely dry, they can expand in your dog’s throat or digestive tract, potentially causing a choking hazard.

Sprinkle a small amount of chia seeds into your dog’s food or homemade treats. We stock chia seeds selected for use in dog recipes in our shop.
