Cucumber for Dogs: A Complete Guide
Cucumbers were first cultivated in India over 3,000 years ago. While dogs have scavenged them throughout history and traditionally been fed them as part of fresh food diets, their use in homemade dog food has gained further widespread popularity in the 21st century as canine diabetes and obesity rates have soared to unprecedented heights.
Today, vets are increasingly recommending cucumber as a food ingredient and safe and highly nutritious alternative to calorie-dense commercial treats because of its healthy, low-calorie nature.

Health benefits of cucumber for dogs
Cucumbers are an exceptionally healthy food ingredient for dogs, offering excellent hydration, weight management support and dental benefits due to their nutrient profile and low calorie count. According to veterinary sources, they can also serve as a safe, crunchy alternative to calorie-dense shop-bought treats.
Their key health benefits include:
Weight management
One-half cup of sliced cucumber contains only about 8 calories. This makes it an ideal treat for obese, overweight or diabetic dogs that need a strict, low-sugar diet.
Excellent hydration
Cucumbers are composed of roughly 96% water. They provide a great hydration boost during hot summer days or after heavy exercise.
Fresher breath
Cucumbers contain natural phytonutrients and phytochemicals. These target and help kill the odour-causing bacteria in your dog’s mouth.
Bone and blood health
Cucumbers provide a safe dose of vitamin K. This nutrient supports bone density and helps with normal blood clotting functions.
Cellular and immune support
Cucumbers supply trace minerals and antioxidants like vitamin C, potassium and magnesium. These help manage blood pressure, support muscle recovery and fight cellular damage.
Digestive regularity
The soluble fibre, primarily found within the skin, helps promote healthy gut bacteria and supports regular bowel movements.

How to feed a dog cucumber
Because cucumbers are roughly 96% water, they are the ultimate summer treat to help keep your dog hydrated without adding excess fat or calories. They are also completely free of toxic compounds, making them a fantastic choice for dogs on a weight-loss plan or those managing canine diabetes.
Every year, I grow masses of cucumbers — so many I had to experiment to find further uses for them all. I discovered you can also dehydrate thin slices of cucumber to make cucumber crisps for your dog. That’s where my brilliant vacuum sealer comes in handy — during the summer I can make sufficient cucumber crisps for my dogs to last right round until the middle of the following year.
Once you have dehydrated enough cucumber for crisps for your dogs, you can then dehydrate yet further crisps and finely grind those into shelf-stable, homemade cucumber powder which you can use to flavour your dog’s food or make winter seasonings or snacks for you and your human family.
