Do Dogs Need Supplements?

by | Dog Food | 0 comments

You’re new to making homemade dog food and you want to make sure you’re giving your dog everything it needs in its diet. So do dogs need supplements when eating homemade dog food would be an obvious question to ask.

Do dogs need supplements

If you want to be absolutely certain that your dog is getting all the nutrients it requires in it’s diet, then it is always better to supplement.

It’s a sad fact today that most soils are not as rich in nutrients as they once were. It stands to reason that if year in, year out, you grow crops that take nutrients from the soil, that soil will ultimately become nutrient deficient. Or at least, less nutrient rich over time unless you regularly replace those lost nutrients with rich fertilizers.

So, unless you grow all your own crops in healthy, nutrient-rich soil, supplements are recommended.

But not just any old supplements. It’s been proven that synthetic commercial supplements have limited beneficial effect at best. Some would go so far as to say they actually have no effect at all.

Better by far are supplements made with 100% natural ingredients that are both human-grade and dog-safe. Plant-based supplements so healthy, you could take them too if you wanted to!

All dogs need supplements

Many people who feed their dog commercial dog food, particularly kibble, are of the view they do not need to give their dog supplements. That any required supplementation is taken care of in their dog’s commercial food.

But commercial dog food does not contain real ingredients. And any supplements it does contain are, like the food itself, synthetic. Synthetic vitamins and minerals sprayed onto the kibble towards the end of the manufacturing process.

Note that term by the way. According to Wikipedia, manufacturing means “the creation or production of goods with the help of equipment, labor, machines, tools, and chemical or biological processing or formulation”.

In other words, food made using such processes is not natural. It’s not real food. So it could be argued that a dog fed a highly processed commercial diet is even more in need of supplementation than a dog fed proper food!

So the answer to the question, do dogs need supplements, is a resounding yes. Along with providing proper food, adding supplements to your dog’s diet is the surest way to give your best friend the best chance at a long and healthy life. And after all, isn’t that what we all want for our dogs?
