How Dogs Helped Cure Rickets
It may not be common knowledge, but dogs helped cure rickets by serving as the primary animal model used by British physician Sir Edward Mellanby in 1919 to discover that the disease was caused by a dietary deficiency.
By raising puppies on restricted diets, Mellanby successfully induced rickets, isolated the specific foods that could reverse it, and paved the way for the discovery of Vitamin D!

We owe our dogs much more than most people realise
My in-house dog nutritionist is forever explaining to people how we humans only know as much as we do about our own dietary needs because of dogs. How we are so similar — we share 84% of our DNA with dogs — that experiments were carried out on dogs back in the 19th and early 20th century, in order to better understand the dietary needs of we humans.
Take rickets for example.
Rickets is a preventable condition that causes weak, soft bones in growing children. It most commonly occurs due to a severe, prolonged deficiency of vitamin D, calcium or phosphorus which are essential minerals required to build strong, healthy bones.
In exactly the same way they are with dogs which is really the point Gerald is making when he explains how much we humans owe to dogs about understanding our own dietary needs.
Historically, rickets was nicknamed the “English disease” during the 19th-century Industrial Revolution. Factory pollution blocked out sunlight in northern European cities, preventing children’s bodies from naturally producing vitamin D.
Back in 1919, British physician Sir Edward Mellanby discovered that rickets was a dietary deficiency disease through groundbreaking experiments on puppies. By feeding them an experimental, indoor diet of oatmeal (mirroring what impoverished populations with high rickets rates ate), he successfully induced the bone-softening condition. He then cured the puppies by administering cod liver oil.
Soon after, American scientist Elmer McCollum isolated the specific active curing agent inside the oil and named it vitamin D.
Medical researchers ultimately resolved the mystery of rickets by proving it could be cured in two ways:
- Dietary supplements: giving dogs cod liver oil or vitamin D directly.
- Light exposure: exposing dogs (or their food) to sunlight or artificial UV lamps, which triggered the skin to produce its own vitamin D.

Food is food
Dogs and human beings have likely been sharing the same diet for something in the order of 35,000 years. The fact that we have shared the same diet for at least 12,000 of those years has been scientifically proven.
Human beings were not designed to eat one diet and dogs designed to eat another. Dogs may have started out as carnivores, but over millennia, they have developed genes which enable them to process the more starchy diet we humans enjoy.
Importantly, dogs and humans developed those same starch-busting genes at exactly the same time. Twelve thousand years ago, during a period known as the First Agricultural Revolution!
Now, dogs are omnivores — animals just as capable of extracting nutrients from plant-based foods as they are from meat-based diets.
(Actually dogs have eaten plant-material since the beginning of time but that’s a story for another day).
It is our ability to eat the same diet that first encouraged dogs to come in out of the cold and to self domesticate all those thousands of years ago. They were attracted by human waste. That ability to share the same food provided the foundations for the relationship we continue to enjoy to this day. Without that, dogs would never have had a need for man. They were here for thousands of years before us and they are likely still to be here thousands of years after we have gone.
I urge anyone to think about this when they read about “dog food” and “human food”. There was a time, and I honestly believe it will come again, when there is only one kind of food and we will all simply call it FOOD as we once did tens of thousands of years ago!
